I do not recommend Pioneer drives because they do not last long and the quality is poor. ASUS and Plextor are a lot better brands. I have an ASUS optical drive (model E608) that is lasting longer than the drives I tried replacing it.
A lot of companies creates their own technology that relates to another. Probably LabelFlash is the same as LightScribe. In order to label discs with LightScribe you will need LightScribe capable discs. One side is for data and other side is where the laser draws pictures or labels the disc. Linux does support LightScribe.
The compatibility is a 50% chance. It will either work or will not work. It is hard to say what optical drive will work for your setup, so you have to take the chance. If you take the chance with ASUS or Plextor, there is a sure thing it should work.

Hi Electro,
Thanks for your advice. Do ASUS and Plextor have SATA model?
For my views on DVD writers see this LQ post. cdfreaks.com has morphed into myce.com and if similarly useful information is available I could not find it but they do have listings of models by manufacturer, as do many other sites including newegg.com. Model availability depends on which country you are buying in.
Just got a 24X SATA Asus DVD Writer, model DRW-24B1ST/BLK/G/AS. It is compatible with Asus M4A78T-E mobo, booting Vista installer. I haven't had DVD Linux installer to test.
Hi MTK358,
What is the model of your Lite-On DVD burner ? Thanks
