About Cannon MG7170 printer + scanner
Hi all,
OS - Ubuntu 12.04 desktop 64bit. I expect to buy a scanner with higher scanning resolution. I found Cannon MG7170 in the market here. MG7170 Specifications http://support-asia.canon-asia.com/c...200177100.html However it is NOT listed here; Manufacturer: Canon http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-CANON I found the driver can be download on; Canon Pixma MG7170 Free Download Driver http://ameliesite.wordpress.com/page/28/ Is it for both printer and scanner? Can this scanner work on Linux without problem? Please shed me some light. Thanks Regards satimis |
Canon driver...
The Canon MG7170 specifications page you linked to has a Support and Downloads link at the upper right. There you will find linux drivers(.deb and .rpm) and source code for both the printer and scanner functions. The zipped downloads should also contain guides for how to install the drivers and how to use the printer and scanner functions. The guides can also be downloaded separately under the menu selection for Product and Software Manuals. Note that the model numbers listed in the guides may not correspond to the MG7170. The printer is managed by CUPS, but the scanning function is managed by the Canon driver and is started with the command "scangearmp". |

Thanks for your advice. I may change my selection because I didn't find Canon MG7170 support slide/negative scanning. The color of some old photos are fading out. I need to scan their negatives (I hope I still can find them on shelves). My old Epson Scanner (Perfection 3490) has this feature. I wonder whether it can work. I would find some negavtives testing it. Printing is NOT important to me. In 1~2 month I only print 1/2 document (sigle page). My old HP Deskjet 5740 printer still works. Even though I need to push the paper into the printer. I found Canon Scan 9000F Mark II Professional CCD Scanner here. I suppose it is the same as "CanoScan 9000F Mark II". The scanner is supported by SANE. SANE: Supported Devices http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-CANON Code:
CanoScan 9000F Mark II http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc..._II_Image.html -> Specification Nice features. Actually what I need is a high quality scanner which can scan slides/negatives as well. Comment and suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks Regards satimis |
In my experience, HP offers the best printer support for Linux.

Thanks for your advice I'm now targeting at "CanoScan 9000F Mark II" which is listed on 'SANE support' as 'complete' (see attached image). This model is without printer only a flatbed scanner. I'll visit Canon Show Room this week. They have this model displayed confirmed on phone 2 hrs before. I'll ask them. Regards satimis |

Hi all,
Further to my late posting I found following 2 interesting video 1) How to make digital photos from film negatives https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMO50AlGyrw 2) How to Scan Film Negatives on iPad https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUO4Wida_wY Should it work I'll use the money for purchasing a new scanner to buy a quality camera. Because after scanning all old negatives the scanner will retire. I don't think I'll use it any more. Edit ==== I'll make a test with my Sony digital camera. Fix the negative on the window door of a book shelves and put a LED Flexible Light Strip behind to take a picture. I'll come back if successful. I must refresh my memory on GIMP. I haven't doing graphic editing for long time. Regards satimis |
