about aticonfig

I just installed ubuntu 9.10 and it screwed up something to do with my video card.

Previously, I had the ATI prop. drivers running under FC10 using my monitor's max res, 1680x1050. Looks like that is history. Here's an initial question:

1) Ubuntu's xorg.conf is nominal to non-existant -- obviously the configuration has been moved to somewhere else. Is this a new xorg thing, or what happened to the configuration?

Anyway, the graphical config stuff in ubuntu won't allow for anything over 1280x720.

Meanwhile, back in FC10, 1680x1050 will now not happen -- it comes out as 1600x1200, which is a bit distended on a widescreen. 1440x900 is now the best I can get.

Does anyone know if aticonfig affects the card, or does it just redo xorg.conf? I haven't tried yet, I'm a bit tired of the shenanigans.

Anyone's input here would be appreciated.

I am 95% sure that aticonfig doesn't change the card.. mainly because I've never heard of resolution changes being applied to a videocard. (and staying during a shutdown)

And yes, Ubuntu's xorg is pretty much non-existant. I'm not sure where they moved the config stuff.. but when I had to deal with ubuntu, I found that some / most old options worked if I just put them back into the xorg file; I guess they still take precedence over whatever else is now configuring the resolution, etc. So long as you backup your xorg.conf (and know how to restore it via command line) then you could try copying* over the graphics configuration part from your FC10 xorg to your ubuntu xorg?

*I don't know if directly copying over the portion will work. I haven't copied from FC to ubuntu xorg, though I have "intelligently copied" some xorg bits from my suse to ubuntu.

Yeah, I was pretty irate. It is rejecting certain resolutions now, which it wasn't doing before -- eg, 1680x1050 ends up as 1600x1200 for some reason.

1440x900 actually seems to perform better tho -- there was some glitchiness in X that's disappeared, and also the VC's are okay, which before they were distorted in a very irritating way.

Thanks for that. I just added a 'Subsection "Display"' into xorg.conf before I booted the ubuntu partition and, low and behold, 1440x900 turned up as a choice in the graphical config thing.
