A7N8X Deluxe problems in 2.6 - sound and ethernet

I've been trying to upgrade my SuSE 9 system to the 2.6.1 kernel, and for the most part it's been easy enough. I was able to get the nVidia drivers for my GeForce FX card to work in 2.6 easily enough, but I'm getting extremely frustrated that I can't get the onboard NIC (3Com) nor the sound to work.

I've searched around and as far as I can tell the kernel supports both of these right off the bat, and I do have the relevant modules compiled. I've gone through the YaST setup for sound and for network card many many times, removing the device and letting it be autodetected again, to no avail. The network setup appears to complete successfully, but the ethernet card never gets loaded, while the soundcard setup gives a failure message.

I'd really like to be able to work in 2.6 normally. Any help would be appreciated.

The A7N8X is a nForce2-based board. The sound module probably needs specific options. Type modinfo snd-intel8x0 for parameters you can pass to the module.

The 3com network device uses the 3c90x module, doesn't it? What errors do you get when loading it?

As for a kernel module that supports the onboard nForce2 network device I have no idea; please tell me if you know of one.

Try the forcedeth patch for the 2.6 kernel to get your onboard nic working.

The 3c59x module supports the onboard 3Com and has been included in the kernel since at least kernel 2.4.20. I have been using the same mobo as you since then, but also had it working in 2.6. I had a bit of trouble myself using modules with 2.6 and instead built everything right into the kernel that I knew I'd need. try "modprobe 3c59x" as root and see if it loads. Maybe it's just not automagically happening. If you are able to load it manually then it's simply a matter of editing a startup script to include that command each time you boot.

I've tried the forcedeth drivers, couldn't get them to work at all. The SuSE network card configuration tool doesn't recognize the nvidia network card at all, it only sees the 3com.

I discovered that I can get both the 3com and the sound working if I manually insert the modules using modprobe and then re-run the SuSE configuration, but each time I restart they fail to load again. I don't even seem to get any useful errors -- they just fail silently.

Edit: Yeah, I might just have to edit the startup scripts like that (which I'd need help doing) but It'd be nice to have it work like it's supposed to.

I got it! The guide I read to upgrading to 2.6 hadn't mentioned the change from modules.conf to modprobe.conf (or it did and I missed it), so both YaST and I were looking there for config information. All I had to do was to move the relevant stuff there and it seems to be working all spiffy now. I just need to remember that I won't be able to configure certain things through YaST until SuSE 9.1 with support for 2.6 or something.
