I really want to get my GDI printer (Tally Genicom 9316) working on Linux (please read the rest of the thread before saying 'GDI printers will never work as I'm sure some people would
).
I have come up with a potential solution to my problem but I need some help implementing it. We run a Windows XP file server on our home network. After much searching, I finally uncovered something on Microsoft's website called Remote NDIS which apparently allows you to connect a USB device to one computer then set it up on another, using drivers locally installed on that computer.
This could mean that the USB printer (I must have it in this room, not where the server is) can be plugged into my machine, have the drivers set up on the server and print to it over Samba (out network is fast enough that there wouldn't be a massive speed difference).
I was wondering if anybody here knew of a way of setting this up (or a similar solution - bearing in mind that drivers are ONLY avalible for Windows 98, 2000 and XP) so that I can use my printer.
This may seem like a bit of an overkill just for a printer but it is a very good one and I can't really afford a Linux compatible printer.
If there is a cheap hardware solution (less than £20/$40) then I'm also willing to investigate that too.
Thanks
