I'm using up-to-date Debian Lenny (kernel: linux-image-2.6.26-1-686, Version 2.6.26-13), and exactly the same built-in card reader works fine (at least with SD cards). It also worked properly with Debian Etch.

I have to admit that I found this question while trying to resolve another issue with the reader. I have not used it for several months, and when I tried it today, it could not properly recognize SD cards. Multiple errors like
Code:
Feb 21 23:26:28 bor kernel: [2139881.285236] sd 0:0:0:0: [sdb] Device not ready: Sense Key : Not Ready [current]
Feb 21 23:26:28 bor kernel: [2139881.285410] sd 0:0:0:0: [sdb] Device not ready: <<vendor>> ASC=0xff ASCQ=0xffASC=0xff <<vendor>> ASCQ=0xff
appeared in /var/log/messages.
After some troubleshooting attempts, I ended up rebooting the PC, (with SD card inserted into the reader as was suggested elsewhere, although this could be unnecessary), and the errors disappeared. So I was finally able to copy photos made with Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX35 to my hard disk. (I provide the exact cam model here because I initially thought it was some non-standard SD card format used by this cam which caused the trouble).
