A testament to windows krappyness!

ok, so i accedently formated my boot partition for linux, it still booted however with the exception of a few services at startup that werent being used anyways, so i decided to completely re-do my linux drive and install slackware. well i have a dual boot configuration with win 98 which i use as a backup os incase i mess up linux(GOOD idea for us linux newbes)

well here i am in windows trying to download the slackware iso.

should i lose my connection to the ftp server , i have to start over from the begining! EVEN WITH WS_FTP PRO!!!

try to play mp3s with media player, choppy as hell and not a constant speed(songs slowing down)

try to use internet explorer, oh boy , half the time i cant connect to a server.

try to watch a dvd, HA dont even get me started.

try to use my emal, CONSTANT bsod.

try to burn a cd. no such device according to windows, even with nero.

and i have reinstalled windows from scratch like 3 times this week.

now these are all simple tasks!

do all this in linux, my system happily complies with out so much as a twitch =)

i tell ya what , kudos to the linux community , i never thought i would get hooked on linux the way i am now, linux has taken a HARD CORE 20 yr microshaft follower and made him a believer!!!

never again will i be controlled by my system, for i have truly become an Athlon Jedi and the force is with me =)

resuming files from an ftp server also depends on if the
ftp server supports it. it does not depend on the os.

songs slowing down? to my knowledge this is not possible
with windows media player, lest you are using a plugin of
some sorts to control the play-speed. choppiness might
be caused due to heavy cpu usage or bad files.

internet explorer and connecting to servers - if the server
can be connected to, internet explorer will do it. if it is just
not possible, all browsers will fail; it is unlikely this is a ie-problem.

watching a dvd? get powerdvd, windvd, or one of the many
other dvd apps out there for windows.

email? you must have an odd setup to make windows bsod
when using email. bsods give information / error codes; using
these the cause of the problem may be located and removed.

burn a cd? get aspi drivers from one of the many sites out there.

if you are indeed 'hardcore', i find it difficult to believe that these
minor problems would make you consider another os.

no offense, and kind regards.

Sometimes getright can pick up broken downloads, but wget -c <url> is so much easier and reliable.

How To Check MD5sums On A Linux Iso Image

If you can wait as long as it takes to d/l on a 56 K, try one of these:

Discount Linux CDs
Linux Central
Cheapbytes

As neenee says, Windows doesn't have anything to do with your ftp, as such. wget is available for Windows - I have it, aside from my Cygwin stuff - and that stuff includes ncftp..

WinAmp 2.81 works great.

Mozilla 1.3b works great.

Don't watch DVDs.

Mozilla 1.3b mail works great.

People burn with Nero all the time, though it does suck there's no freeware burner. That's an app, though Windows could include the capability.

I'm running XP in its 14 month on its initial install. I never reinstalled Win98 in the year or two I used it. Never *needed* to reinstall Win3x unless _I_ screwed something up.

But my Windows 98 was killed by a virus. And Windows Explorer does crash more frequently than is acceptable, which means the whole OS does and almost all my important system files are binary and/or hidden. The registry is the 'single worst invention of computer science'. Almost everything is limited by point-and-click crap. I have *no* true command line - just a DOS box with a crappy selection of some crappy DOS commands. And my box is held hostage by this OS. And it uses unnecessary but mostly un-removable services to report information about my box to MS and anybody else who wants. And IE is a reprehensible piece of junk, integrated into the OS, that makes Mozilla a *necessity*. The system is bloated and wasteful and heavy, even with my pruning and deleting and tweaking. Etc., etc. And Linux is much better generally in too many ways to count. So whatever it takes, I guess. But my point is, as was neenee's, I think, that most of your complaints don't really apply to the operating system, so much as problems you're having with various apps on that OS, which can happen on any OS, depending on the apps you're trying to use. Either way, yeah, most people here agree: Windows sucks.

ok guys i was simply making a comparison between the two oses, i have been in computers for nearly 20 yrs so i know that these issues are pretty trivual, the point is that most of these things can be done with linux right out of the box and they acculy work like they are suposed to as opposed to windows but thanx for the input anyways
