Hi. I am about to buy an external Iomega 650 CD-RW which connects via a USB 2.0 port. I have Suse Linux 8.2 with kernel 2.4.20 and am wondering if this things going to work or be more hassle than it's worth. I mean, I know there probably is some way to get it working, but call me a loser, I'd just like to have it happen easy this time around. Thanks.
Lawrence, it should appear as a SCSI device. Once you've plugged in the device, wait a few seconds and then issuse the command cdrecord -scanbus. This should list it, along with the device number which you may need to know.
R_Jensen, if your media player supports data extraction (ie rather than 'playing' the cd it extracts the raw audio data to a buffer and plays from that) then yes. If you use XMMS then you should check their site for an audio-data extraction plugin. Works for IDE devices and scsi emulated devices (such as ide cd burners) so it should work for usb 2 cd drives.
