A new 19" lcd monitor

I want a normal shape desktop monitor, 19" in size. I do not play games or watch movies on my computer and so do not need a wideangle model. I have an Nvidia Gforce 8500gt graphic card if that is any help.

I do want a monitor with a stand which has a good range of adjustments, both up and down and tilt. I'd also like one which is durable and well made.

I'd appreciate some advice on this, please.

I'm using a couple of Samsung 2243WM LCD monitors and I very much like them. They do all of what you request. There are also different sizes of them, both smaller and larger.

As I understand it, this exact model is no longer made (which sux because it has a matte finish on the LCD surface and I like that - the new models all have the mirrory reflective annoying finish), but there are comparable (newer) models on the market from Samsung.

Like thorkelljarl wrote, just about anything will work well - it's the quality you want to be careful of when you're shopping, so examine all those available to you at the places you might purchase from, and see if they have the tilt/up-down/whatever that you want, and if you like the apparent build quality..

From personal experience, I will from now on avoid (buying) discounted electronics like monitors, from Walmart. There's a reason why they can offer this stuff for really good prices sometimes, so be careful, and don't go to the absolute cheapest thing you find just to save a couple bucks; you'll pay for it in the long run IMO.

You may have trouble finding new monitors that have the "normal" shape. I'm guessing that you are talking about the nearly square (4:3) aspect ratio. Computer hardware manufacturers have to face the problem of having many different models in production. The way that they handle that is to make a variety of new models that conform to new standards and they abandon the old standards. This allows them to have the highest number of models in production that will appeal to the highest number of people while keeping their product list to an optimal number.

This is why you don't find many 500 GB PATA disk drives even though they are common in SATA mode. Disk drive manufacturers are not developing new disk drives for the PATA interface because they have to keep the number of different products in production to an optimal number. The same rule applies to all products. Televisions and computer monitors are subject to the same realities.

Culture shock is everywhere. We must either adapt or die.

Yeah, but it sounds harder than it is in reality. I first thought "why should I use a widescreen monitor with my computer?", but then I got one at work, and after some time I really thought "Wow, it's cool!" and replaced my 17" CRT with a 22" widescreen LCD. It may be just me, but I like the high resolution, and I love the large amount of space on it.

Sorry, I should have said I am in Shrewsbury, England. I could pay up to £120, perhaps a little more.

Yes, I want the 4:3 aspect ratio. I couldn't think of the term when first posting.

If I could be advised of the more robust and durable makes, I'll make a choice from them.

Thanks for your replies.
