a lot of problems

Installed Slackware 9.1 yesterday and I have been trying to configure my computer (laptop) about 20 hours now :-(

1. The first problem I got was the sound but I used aumix to configure it but when I restart my computer the sound is gone and I have to run aumix again. What shall I do?? I saved my settings in aumix.

2. My second problem is the mouse. I'm using a laptop nx9005 from compaq with an touchpad and an optical mouse (USB based) from Logitech. Both mices worked fine except for the wheel on my logitech. I tried to config it in the XFree86-4 but then it refuses to work. Only the touchpad worked. After several hours
editing XFree86-4 the Logitech mouse worked again but the wheel is not working. How do I fix it and how do disable my touchpad? The wheel worked when I ran Mandrake 9.1

3. Another problem I got is that one button on the keyboard is not working in X but it works in the console. The characters the does not work are <> (Copied from another text so you can see what kind of chars I mean) The chars worked when I ran Mandrake 9.1...

I had to change to Slackware because the pcmcia device hangs in Mandrake 9.1

Please help me!

Hi there.

I think I can help on a couple of your problems.

1. With the sound issue, try typing `alsactl store` after changing your volume. So far, it's worked for me.

2. I'm not an expert on mice in linux, but since I'm running Slack 9.1, I'll tell you what I did to get my scroll wheel working. Under the "InputDevice" section of XF86Config where your mouse is, use "imps/2" as the protocol. Then set the zaxismapping of the mouse. Here's what it should look like:

Code:
Option "Protocol" "imps/2"
...
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
The "..." indicates other options that may be after the protocol option.

3. I have no idea about the <> problem. Sorry.

Hope this helps a little! :-)

Which country is your keyboard configured for? Do those keys do anything at all? I know that country variations can result in a couple of keys doing different things, but the rest being as expected.
