A liitle Problem writing to an external DVD drive

I got an internal dvd drive, put it in an external USB enclosure, SUSE 9.1 pro recognised it, reads fine, but when I try to write it using k3b I get the error:
unable to open64("/dev/sr0",O_RDONLY): Permission denied

I also have an inbuilt cdrw which works fine, here are the permissions:
brw------- 1 root disk 11, 0 2004-04-06 06:27 sr0 (dvd drive)
brw------- 1 wearetheborg disk 22, 0 2004-04-06 06:27 hdc

I tried opening the permission(chmod 666 sr0) but then k3b gives another error :
/dev/sr0: unable to proceed with recording: unable to unmount

any help?

Oh, and how do I know if I have a USB2.0 port or USB 1.1? I assumed it woulb be USB 2.0, but now I'm not sure.

Type "cat /proc/bus/usb/devices". If SPD is greater than 12 than its USB 2.0. This is the same as using /sbin/lsusb.

Make sure you are not running k3b while you are in the DVD or CD-ROM directory. Make sure /dev/sda is also set at 666. Also make sure you part of the disk, cdrom or whatever group that it says.

Using USB for a DVD-RW drive is just asking for trouble. I suggest internal DVD-RW drives because they have a lot lower latency than USB and Firewire.

Anything I should add to fstab?

Its a notebook, hence the external drive.

lsusb gave me:
linux:/etc/rc.d # lsusb
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 006: ID 04b4:6830 Cypress Semiconductor Corp.
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 045e:007d Microsoft Corp.
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

the Cypress one is the external drive. Is it USB 2.0?
