939 or AM2?

i am just about to buy and build a totally new comp to runn suse on (10.1 for now till 10.2 comes out)
also possable dual boot into windoze or react OS

i am looking at the AMD Athlon X2 4600+ processor or possably the 4800 (depends on the £££s)

but im unsure wetehr to go for sockett 939 or for AM2

what would you recomend?

Depends on whether you plan on being able to upgrade in the near future. If you dont want to upgrade for awhile(read new mobo/mem) then I would go with a 939, which are ridiculously cheap. I have a X2 3800 and got it really cheap. If you are planning on upgrading soon, go with AM2.(Also, of course, if you are going to use DDR2 mem). Hope this helps.

the upgrade abilatys dont really matter much (unless tehre is suddenly a major revolution)

but i diddnt know that DDR2 RAM coudl only be used with AM2 so i think i will go for that as long as there isnt too much diffferance in price
(i think it is about £20)

I do not know why people decide on 939 rather than the AM2 socket. The AM2 socket includes added features that the 939 socket does not have. AM2 socket is better because it includes virtual hardware extensions. You can use Xen Source to run other OS at the same time with minimal performance penalty. I suggest not picking 939, but go with AM2 socket instead. Also only the AM2 socket includes EE (Energy Efficient) processors.

I recommend using ECC memory with any computer. ECC memory is mandatory for multi-processor systems.

IMHO, planning on future processor upgrades is a poor investment unless the processor for that socket is twice the performance of your present processor of the same socket. The best investment is adding more RAM and upgrading the hard drive model that has the lowest accessing times.

Dont even bother with buying a 939 mainboard
Only buy a 939 chip only if your upgrading your current 939

939 Athlons are not any cheaper than AM2 and 939 is getting extremely hard to get too me 6 stores to try and find a 939 X2

You can get nice and cheap Semprons to suppliment the transistion to buiying DDR2

Get AM2 I would
