802.11g drivers?

I'm about to purchase a 802.11g PCMCIA card from either Linksys or D-Link and was wondering about the current level of support for them in Linux. Do they need different drivers or do current wireless LAN drivers work? Do the drivers support the full 54Mbps speed?

Thanks.

I am sorry but I personally don't know myself, I have a PCMCIA linksys wireless WPC11 card, and I am still trying to get it to work in linux redhat 8. I know people who have done it, but I haven't figure this out yet.

Moderators: could you please move this thread to the Network forum - I should've posted it there to begin with, sorry. Hopefully I'll get some responses.

Thanks.

Ah no worries, if you look under my profile there's a link to bookmars, Jean's page, the wireless center of all that is good has basically any 802.11/b/a/g driver available and its status, from the last time I looked it doesn't seem all that good... there are so few cards on the market so far that there isn't a lot of excitement about writing drivers for them.

Also, 802.11g might not catch on, its only a moderate speed bump and the gear is just a lot more expensive right now.

Cheers,

Finegan

Thanks Finegan, Jean's page is very helpful.
But wny do you say that 11g offers only a moderate speed bump? 54Mbps is almost 5X 11Mbps that 11b has. I know these are theoretical and with the packet overhead and what not, it's less, but isn't it less by about the same factor for both?

move more than 30 feet away from the wireless router and you'll find out, 802.11a is even worse... plus unless you want to move gigs of data it never really matters. Heck I regularly move the entire kernel source accross the house and waiting 30 seconds as opposed to 6 isn't a big deal... digital video, okay that would suck. Then again, most of these ATA100 2.5inch drives can't even write at 7Mb per second sustained...

Cheers,

Finegan
