775 mobo recomendations

Ive just been looking into building a new computer, and this time I'm looking into all the hardware been as much completly linux compatible as possible.

I was interested in the:
Gigabyte S775 Intel 965P ATX GLan 8CH Audio ATX
Motherboard, but I've heard that some people were having trouble with this under linux. (to run a E6600)

I was just wondering if there were any good recomendations for 775 motherboards for linux to run on.

I'd quite like a sata dvd rw but apparently they dont work very well with linux either, is there much advantage of a sata dvd drive over a IDE one? and are there any ones that work in linux out of the box?

Cheers for any help in advance.

Off course you've already seen the openSUSE HCL:

I had a look round the LQ hcl, but its horrible to navigate if your not looking by make. I did look at the Suse hcl in the past but I seem to have missed it this time, sorry.

The one 775 socket motherboard they do list, seems perfect.

ASUS P5N-E SLI Intel - socket LGA 775

works out the box, after flashing the bios which can be done via USB

costs: £69.79 inc VAT on ebuyer

That's the board, that I use, and the only problem, that I've experienced, was the incompatibility with Kingston Value RAM 800MB.
I just build in some 667 MB.
(And guess who added it on the HCL)

wow, so you've helped me even more than you meant to, cheers

I was planning on putting the following ram into the system
Corsair 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 XMS2 Memory Non-ECC Unbuffered CL5(5-5-5-12)

from everything I've read about the motherboard this is the right ram, and should work, but never sure if there is anyway to know if it will work or not?

If you have a look on the webside for the mobo, there's a link to a QVL (Qualified Vendors List) of the approved RAM-sticks - it's a .pdf.

When I bought my new PC, I wanted a AMD-processor, but the owner - a girl actually - meant, that I would be better of with a Intel, so I let her do the configuration.

I ended up with a Asus P5B-Deluxe motherboard, which wouldn't allow me to install anything at all.
If you have another look at the openSUSE HCL you'll see a link to 'CD not found problem'.

She agreed all though, that she would change the mobo, but I had to find out, which I wanted.
You can believe, that there is not many HCL-lists, that I haven't visited.
I mean, I had a Pentium D 925 processor and two 512MB 800MHz Kingston RAM - dual channel.

AND the problem with the missing support in Linux related to the newer chipsets.

I succeeded to install openSUSE on my P5B, but never managed to get any sound out of it.

So - Yes I'm happy with my new board
