512MB to 1GB RAM upgrade makes system run slower

I have a Pentium M laptop (Chinese clone) which is just over a year old. When I purchased it, it had 512MB RAM. This afternoon I added a second 512MB SIMM. The BIOS recognized it, but to my great astonishment it made my system run like cold molasses; it took about ten minutes to boot Ubuntu (Breezy). I have been told it may have something to do with "high memory", but all the Google searches I have done seem to indicate that this was a issue with earlier =< 2.4 kernels. Does anyone know anything more about this?

tried running the laptop with just the new stick in?

could be faulty??

does the new stick have the same speed as the old one. if you add a new stick with slower speed it can decrease your systems overall performance even though there is more ram
