I haven't seen a sound card in use in over a decade because most surround sound tech is built onto boards these days. That being said, I no longer have a surround sound set up so can't really say whether add on cards work. I used to have a Klipsch 4.1 set up that was awesome but it died...
I am sure someone here uses a set up like yours so you should get some useful answers...
I have a soundblaster card under Slackware and afair, mostly using headset, it ran.
5.1 is from Logitech, but not in front of it at the moment so i can't give model.
Sound blaster model can be seen here : https://www.newegg.com/creative-soun...82E16829102048
