3ware 9650se-16ML raid poor performance

I have a 9650se-16ML raid card with 6 seagate 2TB enterprise 7200rpm disks in a Raid 5 configuration.

Write Cache is enabled, storage profile is balanced.

Write performance (writing out a 20GB file) is 175MB/s

That does not seem particularly good to me.

a Dell MD1000 with the same disks and setup achieves 400MB/s+

The card has the latest firmware.

OS: Brand new install of Fedora Core 12

Feel happy with the performance! I have the 9650SE-8 tested with the Debian Lenny and Squeeze and I get poorly estimated 5MB/s. During my internet research I found an article which describes better performance as Stripe = (amount disks -1) * Cluster. I tested it with an Windows 7 and got much better performance. With my Linux box I can forget it ... My Configuration is:

AMD XII 4 650, 2GB RAM, ECC
Asus Board M4A78LT-M
5 x WD20EARS 2TB
