3D woes for ATI Radeon 7500 in Mandrake 9.1

I can't get 3D to work in Mandrake Linux 9.1 with my PCI ATI Radeon 7500 card.
I do have the /usr/X11R6/include/GL directory and it
has all the GL headers as far as I can tell.
I ran the glxgears test and it seems to be working, however I am getting horribly slow performance when playing a game as simple as TuxRacer. I know the card is fine because it works flawlessly in Windows. I have tried installing different DRI drivers already. Any other ideas? I'm sure out of them. I really don't want to buy another card because this one is perfectly fine.

Its one of those All-In-Wonder VE PCI 64MB DDR cards...
could this be why the drivers aren't working? If I could get the TV tuner and video capture going that would be great but for now I just want to get basic hardware 3D rendering to work.

Thanks!

try running glxinfo and putting the output here on the forum. also, if you get this matter cleared up, maybe you could try running quake 3 for a decent benchmark?

the direct rendering "no" means you dont have 3d hardware accel. try using the xfree driver called radeon for your card.

Ok, heres the scoop. I have tried both the XFree Radeon Driver and the DRI Radeon driver (that ATI pointed to) and I still have no luck. Do i need to install XFree86 4.3 with 3D hardware support? because I can't do that for some reason... when I use that version all I get is a black screen and my monitor goes into power saving mode. I get a choice to install either version of XFree86 when I install the Radeon XFree driver in the Mandrake Control Center.

hmm... tough problem... ati doesnt give any drivers for it, and nor does schidener-digital (i dont think). when i was in that situation, i had to upgrade to radeon 9000. of course, there's the xig drivers, but those cost money. how about using xfree 4.2.0? thats what works best for me.

ehh, i can't install XFree 4.2.x because I can never get it configured right. I don't think the card even worked that well in Mandrake 9.0 which is why I upgraded to 9.1... I just added the Option "ForcePCIMode" into the XF86Config-4 file. it didnt seem to help all too much, although i may have to reboot the computer cleanly, not just restarting X. If this doesn't work there's still the Gatos group's drivers. I haven't tried those yet.

Xig drivers cost money? how much are we talking about? do they have a website?

well, they have driver ranking (i think the website is xig.com). the rankings are bronze, silver, gold, and platinum. for 3d accel at all you must have at least the gold ranking, which probably costs about 70$. i think around 30$ more for a radeon 9000 (which i have, but i use mandrake 8.2) would be a bit better. just my opinion, though.
