3D Quality poor - Ati Mobility Radeon 9700 & SuSE Linux 10.0

Hi everybody,

My knowledge with Linux is very restricted.
I 've installed the ati driver as per instructions posted with ati & Novel and I do now have 3D support. However the Kernel agp doesn't let fglrx agp to take over. Do you think that's the problem with the low quality 3D and if yes,how to rectify it.

Ati 9700

Open a teminal type glxgears and post the average frame rate that
you get. Type glxinfo and look for 'direct' in the output.
Go into YaST->Hardware->Video card and monitor. Look for the
Activate 3D acceleration box and see if it has an x in it, if not
try clicking on it. Then click next until you get to finish. If
the Activate 3D box is greyed out then your driver installation
has not succeeded.

3D Quality poor

Thanks for the reply.

The glxgears gives me 75 FPS in 1920x1200 at maximum. The SaX2 has the 3D checked but also disabled.

Last night I 've reinstall the OS and tried to set up the driver the way ATI recomented. SaX2 not working any more, neither from GUI or level 3. As of the quality, remains exactly the same.

It looks like that for some reason the graphics drawing relies only on CPU and the ATI's chipset is getting a rest.

3D acceleration

For comparison I get 240 fps on a 1024x768 screen without any 3D
acceleration since my video chip can't do 3D.
Obviously your ati driver isn't installed properly. If it were
you should be getting a fps rate in the thousands in glxgears.
I can't really help you with this since I have never installed
an ati driver, Nvidia 3D is much easier to get working on
Linux.
Do a google or yahoo search for 'ati 9700 and linux' and see
if you can find any useful tips. In the above search substitute
the name of your linux distro for the word linux, e.g 'ati 9700
and Suse 10'.
