Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

3d acceleration on laptop

I posted a similar thread over on the general board, but no takers... I have an emachines laptop and I want RedHat 9 on it, but i have to disable acceleration while configuring x. I've installed the new RedHat beta and it automatically configures it with acceleration and it works, the same is for Mandrake 9.1.
What is it that is different (the version of x is the same), and can I do something to allowing acceleration??
