Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

2nd hard drive in laptop

Here is what I would like to do to my laptop.
I was hoping to get feedback on what people experienced when they did a similar setup with their laptop.

With my Dell laptop, I wish to keep Windows XP on the internal hard drive.

I would like to be able to boot off of a 2nd drive for Red Hat Enterprise WS.

Was thinking of a HD module that can go into a laptop bay or have a USB HD connected.

Interested in hearing experiences.
What kind of HD was used?
What had to be done to get laptop to boot from 2nd drive?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

When i did it i hooked up the USB HDD booted the Laptop from the install CD and installed it as per normal

USB HDD are visible as /dev/sdx as opposed to
/dev/hda for internal IDE

3 important things i needed

1. FSTAB and Mounts point created during install must be set to UUID (Unique Drive ID)
as the location and device /dev/sda can change a lot especially if you use the HDD to boot a different PC or have a second USB Device hooked up.

2. Best to put the bootloader on the External Drive as well this allows you to use it an another computer as well.

3. Personally i would completely remove/Unplug the Windows HDD to make things easier.
