2.4.18 sound problems (insmod crashes)

Hi have compiled some oss drivers for my onboard sis7019 audio against my kernel source headers. This appeared to work fine.

When I try and load my audio modules

insmod soundcore
insmod ac97_codec

these are loaded ok (afaik but see below)

insmod sis7019

it warns me that loading the module will taint the kernel with non-GPL software then locks up the machine.

Two glaring things that jump out at me...

1) There are NO entries for audio devices in /dev (such as /dev/audio ) ???? When I insmod the soundcore and ac97_codec using lsmod they are not attached to devices

2) My soundcard is detected in /proc/pci as irq 5 multimedia audio controller. in /proc/interrupts it has no interrupt assigned, and in dmesg there is no mention of IRQ 5 and soundcards found or not found.

I am getting a bit confused between ALSA and OSS but this is definatley a driver designed for OSS with a RH2.4.18 kernel. I tried skipping loading the soundcore, as I thought that I had this compiled into the kernel, and again ac97_codec would load, but the sis drivers would lock up the machine.... ?

Any ideas? All help will be greatly appreciated.

I think you want to upgrade to ALSA soon as well cause OSS is deprecated (sp?) in newer kernels. It might be worth the try getting ALSA.

BTW that the driver taints the kernel is just a warning that your kernel isn't completely GNU/GPL (or whatever the linux license anymore)
