1GB USB Stick Problems (Linux and Windows!)

Hi, about 6 months ago i got a 1GB usb stick

Recently i have noticeed windows dosent show an icon (well is does but it is the "unknowen file" icon) and in linux it mounts it under

Code:

/MEDIA/NO_NAME
i can still access my files, and everything else functions properly, but any box i use it in doesnt actuall know what the device is!

Is the Stick slowly dieing? or is this fixable (thru either linux or windows)

It is a TREKSTOR i got in germany (so i am not going back there to get it replased! :))

P.S. i have already tried formatting it!

what do u mean by this
"i can still access my files, and everything else functions properly, but any box i use it in doesnt actuall know what the device is!"

regards

like i said, i can gain access to my files, i can read and write to them and i can defrag.

But it only shows an "unknown file icon" in windows and it is mounted as NO_NAME in linux (it used to be mounted as 1GB_USB_STICK)

It is as if the bit that tells the OS what the device is, has got corrupt!

Is it something in the file allocation table or something?

.. maybe both OSes still havent heard of 1GB memory sticks ...
they recognize them .. but cant believe that it actually is a memory stick ...
maybe there is a list somewhere in /etc or so which lists all the possible sizes for memory sticks ...
& 1 GB isnt listed ...
if you look "at" the stick via some hardware information program ..
there should be some information the memory stick is giving the OS ....
maybe U can use this to make a new entry in some configuration file ...
or in /etc/fstab in Linux you should be able to insert that information ...

Dying hardware .. ? Doubt it ... then Id recommend a thourough check in windows ..
( I guess the memory stick is formatted with FAT32 ) with either chkdsk (WinXP) or scandisk (Win98)
& let it look for bad blocks ....

I have fixed it :D

I re Partitioned the Stick (Why can u only do that in Linux? :))

I had to use Fdisk as Cfdisk said there were 4 partitions of 1gb each?!?!?!? (types i have never heared of!)

Anyway once repartitioned and the formatted, BINGO, a working 1GB usbstick

:):):):):):):):)
