1280 x 800 resolution on AOpen laptop?

I'm having trouble getting my laptop to display a 1280x800 desktop. The laptop is a re-badged AOpen 1551 (sold as a Hi-Grade Notino C2200-1700, not sure Hi-Grade sell outside the UK).

The screen is a 12.1" widescreen that does 1280x800 nicely in W*ndows.

OS is Mandrake 10.1 Community Edition, so it's XOrg 6.7 running here. This is a clean build with no additional drivers added or anything (since I'm also doing battle with the Centrino wireless at the moment).

I've tried various ModeLines in the XF86Config file but I still get corruption when I try the 1280x800 resolution. 1024x768 is OK-ish but is obviously stretched a little and looks blurry like you always get when you run an LCD panel at anything other than its native resolution.

Can anyone kindly point me in the right direction for getting this sorted out?

Thanks ..... Pete
