Is it normal to have 100% of your cpu required the entire time a document is printing? When I attempt to print a document it tells me that I have 100% of my CPU power taken and it stays that way until the document is completly printed. I have an HP Laserjet 4L and am running Ubuntu. I am not sure if I have more than one printing service on my computer and this is what is causing the problem. I think I have cups and HPLIJ or something like this installed.
Unless you have the optional PostScript support, yes this is normal. The pages are rendered using your PC CPU, since the printer does not have the intelligence to perform the function. Even so, most folks don't notice an impact, unless they are printing a large document, have a slow CPU, or both.
I have an AMD 3000+ 64 bit processer. I am just amazed it consumes this much processor power to print a document. Do an HP laserjet 4l have postscript support built into it?
