Hey RHLinuxGUY

I also have the Radeon 9600, and I am having problems too

I figured I would do some testing first... I found that the kernel 2.4.23-rc5 from kernel.org is supporting ATI Radeon. In fact I was able to specify it in the MenuConfig, you can find it under Character devices | Direct
Rendering manager ... and it is ATI Radeon.

dmesg is reporting it initialized:
[drm] Initialized radeon 1.7.0 20020828 on minor 0
Although it does not show up under lspci

I have yet to try the drivers suggested on ATI's web site, partly because like you I do not know what the hell they are talking about with the FireGL.

But eventually I will, so unless you get a better answer than mine (which I hope), I will post my findings later

Regards,
Sebastien

You can use any of the firegl drivers for xfree 4.3.0. You will need these in order to get true 3d working. There is a pretty good howto right here

Worked for me

Yeah, with all of the following cards I've had success by downloading ATI's appropriate Driver, and following their directions. Radeon 9000, Radeon 9700 Pro, Radeon 9800 Pro (256mb). All of these on RedHat9 too. And I'd like to let people know that ATI cards are no harder then nVidia cards to get working under linux... ATI makes it easier with their own configuration tool. When I recently installed a nVidia card, I had a lot of trouble changing the XF86Config file manually. But I digress, it's just a matter of which Manufacturer you prefer, both have their pros and cons, and both can be a pain in the ass under linux. (Sorry for not really helping, but I just wanted to let you know that it WILL WORK. Just be paitent and read the directions.)
