Well, I've a few questions.
How large are your partitions? I saw the output of df, but I'm not good enough to gleam partition size from that. Also, what does your partitioning scheme look like? For instance, do you have / mounted on hda1, swap on hda2, and /home on hda3, or something like that?
If you want to quickly free up some space to get things started, take a look in your /tmp folder. See if there are a lot of large files, or duplicate files taking up space. If so, I believe it's safe to delete them.
Also, check your /var/log folder. Services running in the background of some systems will routinely save log files there. Some of them can be quite large and could cause trouble if not regularly deleted or overwritten.
If you can copy your important documents to another partition temporarily, then do so before you do anything else.
