[Data Recovery] no /dev/hda

I'm trying to recover my Western Digtal 500GB hd (connected through IDE), I've already succesfully recoverd 80GB with copyr.dma (didn't have a bigger IDE drive laying around).

and want to do the rest of the drive with GNU ddrescue.

I use the Parted Magic live cd to do this.

The problem is that I can't find my HD, although it is listed when I look in the Hardware info app.

When i execute fdisk -l, it will only list /dev/sdb, which is my usb target drive.

Testdisk doesn't see it either.

How can I access it as /dev/hda or /dev/sda or whatever it wants?

Thanks.

(Programs like Copyr.dma, Mediatools, hdclone all do recognize the drive, but not the parted magic linux live cd.)

Is there anything you should tell us about your WD 500GB HD? Any hardware failures? Or just deletion you're trying to recover from? What file system was on it? Does your computer BIOS list the HD? What does 'dmesg' say about harddisks or detection errors when you boot Parted Magic? If you have any other Live CDs try those, especially HELIX version 2 or recent KNOPPIX, and jot down the same. If you have an USB casing you could try using that.

The drive I want to clone has lots of bad sectors and I cannot access the file system, so I want to do a sector by sector copy, and then I will have a clone I can work with.
Trying to fix the drive will only make it worse.

The drive is recognized by the BIOS.
The file system is NTFS, but with a sector by sector copy, it doesn't matter what it is.
I have tried knoppix, but it has troubles booting properly.
I don't a spare usb case laying around.

PS. There are 2 drives in the system, one external USB drive (which is /dev/sdb), and the faulty SATA drive connected through and IDE converter.

"Emask 0x9 (media error)" means the kernel reported that libata detected a media error and the "error: { UNC }" tells you that this error can't be recovered from. See http://ata.wiki.kernel.org/index.php...error_messages for more details. Since this is a bad blocks error trying other Live CDs makes no sense and since there's a SATA-to-IDE converter there's no question of bad chipsets / drives combos like VIA 8237 or Silicon Image (they should go bankrupt Real Soon Now as far as I'm concerned). Check if the vendor has harddisk tools that remap bad blocks? If shelling out cash for a commercial product like Spinrite is not a problem maybe consider it. I've never used it but it seems some people have had good results with it...

But I don't want to remap the bad sectors, programs like spinrite are known to kill your HD when it's in a bad state.
I just want access to the drive so I can clone it, it works with other programs I've used which all use freedos as OS, but they're not as good as ddrescue is.

Any other ideas?

I've got it working.

Booted with a different live cd, ultimate Debian live cd from multidistro.com, it has ddrescue preinstalled.
Works like a charm.

I too had a similar issue with Seagate 500 MB SATA disk connected to IDE converter. But the bad sectors could be repaired and the disk saved with Seagate firmware upgrade and Seatools.

I had earlier come to this post in search of a solution. Good that tabakkie could map the HD, but perhaps some would be able to save the disk.
