'v41:/dev/video0'

I run Fedora 10 and use HP MFC 7580 networked via a router. It prints well but will not scan - just states a failure notice and states invalid argument.

xsane does not recognise it.

Any ideas?

I've never networked a printer, but my question is: does the printer scan regularly when not networked.

I think I should have given more information. The error message given is "failed to open device" 'v41:/dev/video' "invalid argument".

The MFC isan HP Officejet Pro L7580 and the driver used is Foomatic/hpijs.

The device URI is "socket://192.168.0.4:9100" and it is connected to my PC by the usual ethernet cable. Printing, Faxing, Copying is fine. But the device in scanning mode is not recognised.

It worked fine when I used Mandriva Spring 2008. So I presume there is something different between Mandriva and Fedora 10.

Under Mandriva the URI was different, being:-

hp:/net/officejet_pro_L7500?ip=192.168.0.4

Does this help ?

This means that xsane is trying to open either your webcam or tv tuner. Have you tried running xsane as root to see if it finds it ? Maybe it's a permissions problem.

Same issue, Fedora 9 and HP OfficeJet 7210

I am receiving the same error message as Mark Myatt, attempting to scan with my HP OfficeJet 7210. I installed the HP Device Manager from hplip (which I had not needed for printing), and this changed the xsane error from identifying "v4l:/dev/video0" as the invalid argument to identifying "hpaio:/net/HP_OfficeJet_7200_series?ip=172.16.90.98" as the invalid argument. Running xsane without invoking it from the HP Device Manager still produces the original "video0" version of the error. It doesn't seem to be a permissions problem, as running sudo /usr/bin/hp-toolbox and then invoking xsane using the "scan . . ." button produces the very same result - preceded by a warning that it is a bad idea to run xsane as root. Any troubleshooting ideas would be much appreciated.

Scanning with HP Office jet Pro 7580

Now works perfectly having upgraded to Fedora 14.
