...'stuttering' in Linux, Shuttle XPC setup, HDD related?

Hi all,

Just managed to get my most recent setup online. Currently on Fedora Core 4, was on Mandriva 2006 shortly before as a test but had no luck getting on my wireless network using a USB Belkin WiFi adaptor which works fine under Fedora.

Anyway - on both distros this PC suffers from stuttering. Every second (literally, it is every second with great precision) my HDD activity light comes on, and it is like Linux 'stalls' for a fraction of a second. Now viewing webpages and typing you don't notice any side effects, but if you are moving the mouse when it does it the mouse 'jumps', and also I tried Armagetron and it makes it very awkward to play, because the whole game 'stalls' momentarily.

Anyway heres the current setup :

Shuttle XPC SN95G5 V2 Barebones - nForce 3 250 Chipset.
HDD - Seagate Barracuda 80gb on SATA
CPU - AMD Athlon64 3000 (running at 2.2GHz)
MEM - Geil Ultra 2x256mb (Dual Channel, running at 201MHz x2)
GFX - Geforce 5200 (using drivers included with Fedora Core 4)

Sorry it's a basic spec but I wasn't sure if theres a known issue with any of these components say (apart from the overclock) without overcomplicating stuff.

Anyway, any ideas/help would be seriously appreciated

Cheers all!

Lightbulb Bad SATA Driver?

You might want to see if you have the latest drivers for your Nforce chipset from Nvidia. I remember reading that some SATA chipsets have issues in Linux. Maybe Nvidia has documentation on their site about this issue? Good Luck.
