YUM package searches unsuccessful

All except for the most basic stuff (mc for example), YUM can't seem to hit on any search and can't install anything as a result. The current mirrors I have set are the default ones:

* base: yum.singlehop.com
* extras: ftpmirror.your.org
* updates: ftpmirror.your.org

Are these somehow off-line? Pinging yum.singlehop.com comes back with yum.singlehop.net and times ranging from 28 to 34 ms. ftpmirror.your.org's name didn't change but had slightly slower pings.

you are aware that CentOS like RHEL is targeted for the OFFICE and SERVER
-- not for HOME use .

what is in the base repo is just the BASICS
and most of what one needs for THE OFFICE .

what is it you want ?
Have you read the centOS wiki?
-- guessing NO you have not installed epel or elrepo, or rpmforge, or ,,,, any others
http://wiki.centos.org/FrontPage
and the section on thirds party repos
http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories
Warning:
and HEED ALL THE WARNINGS !!!!!!!!!!!!
and install and CONFIGURE !!!!!!!!!
" yum-priorities" plugin !!!!!!!!!

mind you CentOS uses the RedHat documentation
and that documentation ASSUMES !!! that you have a LOT of redhat experience
https://access.redhat.com/site/docum...erprise_Linux/

also there are almost NO tutorials and guides ( there are some on random sites but....)
for those you need to port the fedora guides TO BE USED ON CENT
( as in have a lot of redhat experience)
--- this CAN be ported for use on CentOS
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f19.html
but YOU have to port it

Also DO NOT !!! manually set the centos *.repo files to use a specific mirror!! ( unless you have to on a offline LAN )
use the DEFAULT !!!
mirror list that is already set
