Sadly, the book will almost certainly be outdated by the time it makes it to print (or will be shortly after). Magazine articles stand a better chance at covering current versions of software. You just have to wait around for one to publish an article on the software you're interested. The manpages are the most up-to-date descriptions of the currently installed OS though they were never really intended to be educational texts---they are mainly just reminders of the obscure switches you've forgotten about. Some commercial UNIX's manpages tended to have some very useful EXAMPLES sections but those are rare on Linux. The info pages are a little better -- at least the ones actually written for info -- but, IMHO, even those aren't the best thing to be learning from.
