yast2

yast2 works fine in X for root but for my local user when i su i get this error:

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Protocal not supported by server

y2controlcenter: cannot connect to X server :0.0

can anyone tell me how to get rid of this so i can use yast2 with my local user

i already checked most of the suseconfig settings but if someone could give me some pointers on how to fix this please do.

You need to give others (thats other machines and users) access to your xsession. So in your xsession do
xhost +localhost
to give every local user access to your xserver and then do
su
and run yast. Maybe before running yast you also need to do
export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0 to tell the shell which xserver to use.

Oh, be careful with xhost +localhost expecially in a multiuser system. It's very funny executing xkill for an open xserver, or filling the screen with penguins.

It's because a graphical program won't run from the terminal (with the default configuration).

I haven't tried what Azrael suggests (export DISPLAY=...) but this will work as well:

Click on your menu and go to "Run Command",
Enter "yast2" in the box and then hit "Options".
In "Options" check "Run as different user".
Make sure "root" is in the Username box.
Enter in your root password in the Password box.
Click "Run"

That should work.

Ok, I just tried what Azrael suggested and it works (no surprise there).

The way I did it was to run "export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0" from a terminal as root ("su"ed to root).

Then I ran "xhost +localhost" from the "Run Command..." box (as myself, not root).

Now it should work (Thanks Azrael).

Also worthy of note is that as of SuSE 8.1 the console version of YaST2 works quite nicely. It's great for remote admin tasks and now I _almost_ don't miss the original YaST.

When you say remote admin, do you mean using YaST over an ssh connection, or is there another way to remote admin with YaST?

I have another similar problem with yast2..I have a SLES9 and I telnet to the machine from another machine(pqr).
eg:
telnet abc.com
login : xyz
password: ****

setenv DISPLAY=pqr:0.0
su
Password:****

yast2

y2controlcenter:cannot connect to X server pqr:0.0

Any pointers for this will be greatly appreciated..
Strangely this issue does not occur on RED hat..
Thanks
