XWindow Resolution in RedHat 7.2
 

Hello

Though this is my 6th year I am working with linux (for both server and personal computer) I have not been successful in changing screen modes when I am inside XWindow. I have done this by running X setup again and ...

Would someone please tell me how can I do this (Shortcut keys? Although I remember I have tried shortcuts but it has not worked)

ctrl_alt_+ and ctrl_alt_- change the screen, but you have to have more than one screen setup in XF86Config for it to do anything meaningful.

For the longest time I was so confused by that, because I thought I _was_ hitting ctrl_alt_+, etc. Of course, then I realized that the ones on the keypad are the only ones that are really + and -... turns out I was actually hitting - and = :eek: (but that "-" doesn't work anyway, at least not on my computer)

This is why I have not been successful. You are not alone. I stupid have not understood this after 6 years.

Although I use XWindow rarely as it has crashed my box sometimes ago.

first using Xconfig you wil have setup more than one screen resolution and the you can use the given keyboard shortcuts.. CTRL ALT + and CTRL ALT -

Just curious.. am using xwindows for quite some time now and had never the crash problem.. what problem it would do.. will it let just hang or throw u back to the shell??

I am not very bad in configuring xwindow. In fact I have dig xwindow configuration file to find the reason but I did not thought about this one.

It sometimes hangs in XWindow when an individual application hangs (for example I remember when I was browsing using either netscape or mozilla)

In the event of Xwindows crashing you might be able to use ctrl_alt_f1 to go back to the console where you started X and maybe see some clue of the problem, maybe init to another level or kill X, ctrl_alt_bksp from X will kill the X server and then you can start it back up again.

If these do not work you have more serious problems causing a hard lock of your system.
