Xvfb: problem with xwd grabbing separate windows

Greetings X gurus.

I am using Xvfb to provide virtual X services in lieu of a true X server. I have two xterm clients connected to the virtual server. Each xterm is running a perpetual application, and I would like to be able to grab snapshots of the two xterms periodically. I use xwd to do this, capturing the screen to bitmap images for viewing.

The problem is that the two xterms are exactly overlapping, and only the 'top' window is 'visible'. Is there any way to rearrange the windows in either the X-Y plane or the Z plane so that I can gain access to both windows?

Using xlsclients and xwininfo, I see all of the expected information regarding the two windows. I am using the -fbdir option to store the virtual screen in a file in /tmp/....

I already know that I could run the two applications in separate virtual displays, but I would rather use only one. I will probably also want to be able to take a snapshot of the root screen, showing the two terminals side-by-side, synchronized in time.

My system is using :

OS Kernel: Linux version 2.6.9-11.EL (root@yort.fnal.gov) (gcc version 3.4.3 20041212 (Red Hat 3.4.3-9.EL4)) #1 Thu Jun 9 15:23:29 CDT 2005 F

(How do you get Xvfb to report version info?)

Thanks.

--- rod.
