Xubuntu On CD - Booting & Running from LiveCD I made - Help!!!
 

I need help doing this Right. I want to Run Xubunt from a CD with out installing anything on the Hard drive. I had first found out about getting Xubuntu Free on a blank CD of your own. So, to make things short: I got a 5 pack of CD-Rs. Well I downloaded Xubuntu ISO file from Xubuntu.org to the Desktop of this computer (family Computer). Then I got out one of the CDs & put the ISO file on the CD & tried writing the file to it, but then after a while of progress before it was done an error accured. So it didn't complete. But then I found out about getting it Burned with the ISO becoming multible files & folders. So, I found a Freeware app for Burning to CD. It is called CDBurnerXP. So, to make things short, I avengly found instructions on how to Burn the ISO file to the CD. The site is Here. So, I did what it said to do. I kept the speed what it was, though (48x, CD is that speed). So, I did that. Went through successfully. So, then made sure things were correct. Then I restarted/rebooted the computer with CD in Reading Drive. Toggled with the starting settings & made CD-ROM run first. Then the CD was loading. Then the Xubuntu screen came up. Not sure which to select, I selected the first one, 'Start or Install Xubuntu'. Well, then it was loading. But then this is were the problem accurse. After the proccess get's done the screen goes to blank (black) with behind light. the CD runs a little more then stops. I then don't here the CD running. I have waited for long minuts, but nothing. Should I still wait? Is that normal? So, I don't know what I did & how to fix it or get it to working. So, please help.

when you have the "start or install" option there is an option below to check the cd for defects.
you might want to try that first.

writing at the slowest speed possible is usually a good bet

Ok, yeah, that was what I was thinking. I have other blank CDs (3 more only!). I had tried alread 2 times with 2 other CDs. 1. I just put the ISO in/on it (One file (ISO)!). Error with that. & 2. was the problem I had just explained before (First post above ^^^ .).

So, now I will do that. This is were I am now:

1 I re-got the ISO file YES
2 I got a diffrent burner (ISO Recorder) YES
3 I have the ISO Recorder How TO instructions YES
4 I have a blank CD Ready YES
5 I am at the point were I am to do so (Burn ISO to CD with IR.) YES (Going to do so very soon (Really Ready), please reply ASAP. Thanks.)

Ok so now about changing the speed........Could I/Should I change it to 8x Speed (I herd seggestion from live.pirillo.com chat when I was asking help on this)?

I think the program that gave you that menu is GRUB. So at least we know the CD was burned pretty much correctly. There are still possibilities of errors in downloading or burning, but those are unlikely. Most likely the CD is perfect.

I'm not certain which of two things that is. Most likely the display driver automatically selected isn't compatible with your display card. Less likely, but possible, the splash screen utility isn't compatible with your display card.

Hopefully someone who knows Ubuntu better can give a more detailed answer, but the generic answer is:

Back in that menu in GRUB, you can select an individual choice, then see and edit the details of the command used to start the Linux kernel. There are options available to eliminate the splash screen (which may make the problem easier to diagnose even if splash wasn't the problem) or to force the choice of a different display driver.

Adding the text xdrvr=vesa (to that line used to load the Linux kernel from GRUB) fixes most similar display problems in several distributions. But I don't know if vesa is the right choice for your display adapter nor if that is the right syntax for selecting vesa in Unbuntu. Some distributions have a VESA choice on that menu, which may solve the problem and at least can show you the correct syntax for selecting VESA even if you then need to combine it with things from other choices in the menu.

In Windows, there are a few places (Device Manager, etc.) where you can get the brand/model of the display adapter in a form slightly more meaningful than whatever Dell may have said it was when they sold it. That info may tell someone, who knows more than I do about the Ubuntu CD, what to tell you to type within GRUB in order to get the GUI working (in case XDRVR=VESA isn't the right answer).

Well, I tried ISO Recorder & tried each speed from 0x to 48x, but it keept saying an Error. The CD is blank. Well, maybe I don't need another CD try. I just need to fig out the one I do have that has Xubuntu on it. I have to find another computer to try it on to see if it's the computer or if it's the files/folders on it. But first, help with the prob at hand with the one I do have almost working.

Sorry. I don't know enough about how that stuff varies between distributions. Hopefully someone who knows Ubuntu will answer soon.

I did a quick google search on that subject and the content I found seems to say that there is a "safe graphics" choice on that same menu (from which you said you tried the first choice and it ran into what is probably a graphics problem).

If you insert that CD while Windows is booted, you can see the files in the directory /boot/grub/ within that CD. One of those (probably named menu.lst) contains the details behind that first menu you see. That file might tell me (or others with basic knowledge of Linux and little knowledge of Unbuntu) what to tell you to try there. But you would get a better answer from anyone who knows Ubuntu.

I don't want all the guesses I'm typing here to distract any expert who might jump to the end of this thread from addressing the question of how to use that display adapter when booting the Ubuntu liveCD

Yeah. I hope somebody does come hopefully soon. I think I might join a Ubuntu forum & ask about this or link to this. I thought there were be a lot of diffrent Linux Distro experts/users here. I will also try searching about this, too, which I did before but not great results. I'll do it again. But anyways, Thanks a lot for the help :) .

there could be a lot of very very simple things going on, we just need to figure out what.

since it is a live cd, it will do its best to detect all your computer in once.

what you can do to see if the system itself is running and the problem is only a graphical driver, is when the system gives you the black screen to press on the keyboard:

CTRL + ALT + F1

if this gives you a black screen with tekst asking for your login at least you know the disk is fine and the system is running

Yeah, I might try that. But the 2nd CD that has Xubuntu on it & kind of working is now not. It loads the Xubuntu screen but when selecting Start, it tries but fails. Errors. I checked for CD defects & after trying, it says something about 'I/O'. So, I don't know. I think it was because of ISO Recorder. I uninstalled it. But do you concider the trying of 'LiveUSB'? It seems that LiveUSB is better in ways compare to LiveCD. LiveCD may be too much trouble.

usb sounds like a good option.

but if the cd itself was OK i'm not sure if it will give you better results.

i did some debian install from usb instead cd in the past and at least i had the idea it was a lot faster then compared to cd.

Yeah, it benefets better compared to LiveCD. I have seen/read about it. But, can you tell me how & what you did (in steps, maybe) of how you did the LiveUSB with Debian, so that it can give me an idea of how to do so? Here are some othe Questions:

Is it an ISO also or something else?
Was it to be Burned to a USB or just copy it to USB?
What are the Idems (USB, ISO, ISO Burner, etc.) needed? (<<< This one most likely answers most of 'em.)

i can't really look it up right now because i would be dropping a lot of mail, but i have a bios where i first have to select the usb option and enable usb to pretend it is a floppy, and then it shows up as bootable device

the steps i followed for a USB installation have little to do with a LIVE session, although you can basically do the same and the steps are different because you have to include CASPER (the live part), you would have to google for it.
anyway for a debian normal install USB (without live) it would be like this

So, for me, in the computer, I switch & make Floppy Disk (Not Installed) 1st or do I have to do something in the Booting options?

Yeah. I did, how ever, find a sit about LiveUSB making. It's Here. But I will see about more & if it or other pages up-to-date.

Also, another Question...

I have owning of 2 USB devices. They are...

A 4GB USB
A Card Reader (USB, The kind that looks like a USB, but can slip in a SD card in.)

I also have a 2GB SD card. Now, the 4GB has content on it. The SD card has content on it. Do I need a 'Blank' USB/SD card for it to work or do it? Can an SD card work as a LiveUSB with the card reader?

Also, I forgot to mention at beginning that the computer has some infects from 'badware' (Sorry "( ). But we do have protection (More now when incident occurred of an attack at this computer.), though.
