xterm font change

i'm trying to change the default font of a few X applications, and i'm starting with xterm.
i have the following line in $HOME/.Xresources:
xterm*font: -microsoft-verdana-bold-r-normal-*-*-110-*-*-p-*-viscii1.1-1

and when i load .Xresources and open an xterm the characters are really spaced out, like this:
h i ! t h i s s u c k s
but it's in the proper font...
anyone know what's up?
