Hi,

I have a few systems that use nvidia cards. Some have 2 DP ports and 1 DVI, while others have 4 DP ports. I only use 2 DP ports (dual display). The systems boot into a replicated filesystem over the network. The xorg.conf is configured to force the displays to be arranged DFP-0 below DFP-1, so if a displays cable is disconnected and re-connected, then the top-bottom arrangement is maintained. (If xorg.conf does not have the DFP-0 below DFP-1 setting, then once the cables are reconnected, the arrangement is changed to left-to-right, which is what I need to avoid since the physical displays are not setup in that way)

An issue arises on the card with 1 DVI and 2 DP ports. The port numbering (DFP-#) is different, since the DVI port is detected as DFP-0 by xrandr.

I was was wondering if there is a way to have xrandr detect the connected ports, and still force the displays to be DFP-# below DFP-#+1, rather than left-to-right (especially if cables are disconnected and re-connected)?

I guess an alternative is to detect the graphics card and load the proper xorg.conf file, but I would like to avoid that if possible.

Suggestions would be much appreciated.

I personally do not use xorg.conf to arrange my displays, I run xrandr from my ~/.xinitrc.
Code:
xrandr --auto --output DVI-I-3 --left-of DVI-I-2
