xpad help with gxmame

I've got my joydev and xpad modules loaded, a nifty little app called usbtree tells me that it the kernel is recognising my plugged-in Xbox gamepad as an xpad which is good, /dev/input/js0 is created and if I cat that and play with the buttons I see binary output so in theory it's all working fine. However in gxmame I go to the options and specify /dev/input/js0 as my joystick and it errors out saying
** Message: xmame: Error: joytype 1 is not available
Another weird thing, when I run gxmame as root the option for SDL Joystick comes up which is where I put in the path to the device etc, but when I run it as a user I get nothing, it doesn't recognise it at all.

Anyone know anything about this?
