XORG configuration for screen resolution

hi,

I have just updated my monitor to LG Flatron Wide.
Optimal resolution is 1680x1050.
The VGA is radeon x1550

I have a new installation of Fedora Core 6. - 2.6.18-1.2798.fc6 on AMD x86_64 machine.
I download the display driver from the AMD site and was then able to use the monitor.
Driver version is 8.44.3

However the highest setting on the resolution is 1280x1024

How can I configure to achieve optimal resolution?

I did try the following and rebooting but it didnt appear to make a difference

Code:
[root]# gtf 1680 1050 60

  # 1680x1050 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 65.22 kHz; pclk: 147.14 MHz
  Modeline "1680x1050_60.00" 147.14 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1087 -HSync +Vsync

[root]#
and the I put that into the xorg.conf file as follows

Code:
# Xorg configuration created by pyxf86config

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the .00 you have on the modeline can screw it up so try the edited version I have done above. Besides that you should not really be have to be adding that to your file anyways it should be getting auto-detected. Can you post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file so we can see how everything is getting detected? You will need to break it into two post as it is rather big. Also they say it not needed anymore but I always put the complete specifications for my monitor in my xorg.conf just so X has no doubts as to what my monitor can do, you can usually find these numbers in your monitor manual an example form my file below to give you an idea of how it is formatted.

Code:
# Dell 2007WFP
Section "Monitor"
       DisplaySize 431 272 # mm
       Identifier "Monitor0"
       VendorName "Dell"
       ModelName "2007WFP"
       HorizSync 30-81
       VertRefresh 56-76
EndSection

I just seen something similar on the Debian user mailing list where it looks like it may be a bug in the driver that causes it to not use the 1680x1050 and to top it off it says it may ignore a custom modeline as well, the solution there was to download then install the previous version of the driver.

https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206...ux.html#183417

For your modeline you were using if it is necessary then you may want to try according to these in your output.
Code:
(II) fglrx(0): Supported additional Video Mode:
(II) fglrx(0): clock: 119.0 MHz Image Size: 474 x 296 mm
(II) fglrx(0): h_active: 1680 h_sync: 1728 h_sync_end 1760 h_blank_end 1840 h_border: 0
(II) fglrx(0): v_active: 1050 v_sync: 1053 v_sync_end 1059 v_blanking: 1080 v_border: 0
(II) fglrx(0): Supported additional Video Mode:
(II) fglrx(0): clock: 146.2 MHz Image Size: 474 x 296 mm
(II) fglrx(0): h_active: 1680 h_sync: 1784 h_sync_end 1960 h_blank_end 2240 h_border: 0
(II) fglrx(0): v_active: 1050 v_sync: 1053 v_sync_end 1059 v_blanking: 1089 v_border: 0
(II) fglrx(0): Ranges: V min: 56 V max: 75 Hz, H min: 28 H max: 83 kHz, PixClock max 150 MHz
(II) fglrx(0): Monitor name: L226W
This.

Code:
Modeline "1680x1050" 119 1680 1728 1760 1840 1050 1053 1059 1080 -HSync +Vsync
Or

Code:
Modeline "1680x1050" 146.2 1680 1784 1960 2240 1050 1053 1059 1089 -HSync +Vsync
Using something like this for your monitor section.

Code:
Section "Monitor"
       DisplaySize 474 296 # mm
       Identifier "Monitor0"
       VendorName "LG"
       ModelName L226W"
       HorizSync 28-83
       VertRefresh 56-75
EndSection

hi,
i just installed fedora 8, and have a similar problem (unable to set resolutions beyond 800*600).
here's is the xorg.conf file
Code:
# Xorg configuration created by pyxf86config

Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier "Default Layout"
        Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
        InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier "Keyboard0"
        Driver "kbd"
        Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
        Option "XkbLayout" "us+inet"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Videocard0"
        Driver "vesa"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Screen0"
        Device "Videocard0"
        DefaultDepth 24
        SubSection "Display"
                Viewport 0 0
                Depth 24
        EndSubSection
EndSection
can anyone help..?

I think it is a known bug
Refer to http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi (bug # 868)

I tried several different drivers from the ati site.

With driver version 8.40.4, I was able to use 1400x1050 which isnt bad.
you can get this driver on ati site.

http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/l...-r-8-40-4.html
