XMMS will not play .wav files on hard drive

I have some music files stored on hard drive that can be played in XMMS when I log-in to Mandrake 10 KDE as one of the ID's I have set up but on the other XMMS just disappears when I select this directory and then hit the play button. Any ideas. Not permissions I don't think.

Thanks

That does not work for me.
I can play mp3, but get no wav. That does play in Kaboodle fine.
Any suggestions?
