xmms mp3 in gnome

I use Redhat 9.0. I installed XMMS mp3 plugins and I could play MP3 in KDE. But strangely, I couldn't play in GNOME. Sound crazy.
I checked the volume. It's ok. And I checked the sound card. It's ok.
Why is that?

I had a similar problem and was able to solve it by removing the $HOME/.xmms directory.

Make sure XMMS is set to use OSS or eSound output (probably esound) rather than aRts.

i am using OSS. i found that eSound is a bit weird. it will halt xmms from working after a couple of playing of mp3s.
