xfs/font issues on Fedora Core 1
My linux box has started to have font issues. It runs Fedora Core 1 and X11. I don't know why and have spent a lot of time googling around for a solution.
I first noticed this when trying to run xemacs. It would core dump with a message
about how no iso8859 fonts could be found. I could, however, start emacs successfully
after I did /etc/init.d/xfs restart. I would paste the error message here, but, the problem
has now reversed! Now, I can start xemacs, but not emacs, it core dumps and gives
this error (yes...it says 'founds'):
******************
No fonts founds
*******************
This seems a bit crazy. If I do /sbin/chkfontpath --list, I get this:
*******************
Current directories in font path:
1: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled
2: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled
3: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled
4: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc
5: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1
6: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo
7: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic
8: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF
9: /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1
10:
11: /usr/share/AbiSuite/fonts
*************************************
I have also discovered that other things aren't working, such as 'ds9' (an astronomy
.fits data file tool), which will core dump when I try to look at a file header (essentially
text):
*****************************
TkpGetFontFromAttributes: cannot get any font
*****************************
Acroread starts up, but with the following complaints:
******************************
Warning: Cannot convert string "Fixed" to type FontStruct
Warning: Cannot convert string "fixed" to type FontStruct
Warning: No fonts available with charset "ISO8859-1", using "ISO8859-1".
Warning: Cannot convert string "-adobe-helvetica-bold-r-normal-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1" to type FontStruct
Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-10-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1" to type FontStruct
*******************************
I can't seem to find any other font issues so far. Could certain fonts be corrupted?
Or, is some path setting to blame? I've thought about reinstalling the xfs server, but,
I'm not sure how that would solve the problem. Perhaps some config file for X11 is
corrupted/wrong?
Does anyone have any ideas they might share with me? I'd really appreciate some
font knowledge coming my way, as I'm out of my element on this one!!
Thanks-in-Advance,
Tracy
