Xfce will not start
I have no idea why but Xfce will not start while Lxde will on the same Distro which is Magiea 1.
How do I go about starting Xfce from the console and what logs should I look at? Thanks in advance! |
Code:
startxfce4 |
Just log out and select it from the login screen.
Then it should start up. IF it doesn't, then something is missing. cheers |
On Slackware, when xdm is used as the graphical login screen, after login, xdm runs X as root and /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc as the user.
When the system is configured to use Xfce, /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc is a symlink to /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.xfce which is a symlink to /etc/xfce/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc. |
I ran startxfce4 and got this.
Code:
[root@localhost kbs]# startxfce4 |
It works now.
I tried to un-install and then re-install but I removed Task Xfce by mistake thinking it would remove all of Xfce. Xfce is now working fine.
Should I feel happy? Should I give this anymore thought? Mageia has become my dominate user Distro but this kind of thing makes me want to put the extra effort in to CentOS/Scientific. Thanks for the Responses! |
My (far from infallible) rule is "use a distro with its preferred desktop". Even respectable distros can have accidents with "afterthoughts": the EPEL Xfce for CentOS that forgot a vital file, or OpenSUSE offering Gnome and Xfce with no file-searching tools.

I'm going to move away from "Production Distros".
I usually suspend my computer verses turn it off so I don't really know when a new install disrupts the system. When I rebooted; after Xfce seemed fine ,Firefox would not open and none of my File Managers would work correctly. I was using Fedora because I had to reboot from Mageia and I forgot that Fedora can never work out their (suspend) issues so I moved back (rebooted Mageia) which never has a suspend problem. I don't think that the Production Distros are worth fooling with too much anymore and that is why businesses will pay Redhat, etcetera, the big money. For myself I will aspire to use LFS or Gentoo in the future.
Thanks for the Replies and I'm off to a new thread! :hattip: |
