XFCE and Keyboards (need help)

I just installed XFCE on my Ubuntu rig. Everything is working fine except my keyboard. For some reason it is not the default Canadian or American keyboard layout... I have been looking everywhere to try to find out what to do. I hope someone knows what to do.

ééééééééééééÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉÉ...,,"''""'"

Ièd like to change it to the American layout.

How about editing directly your XFree86 / Xorg config file ? it's in /etc/X11. somewhere in it you have a line that looks like
Code:
Option "XkbLayout" "us"
check this line, and every similar line.
