Xfce??

Has anyone installed XFCE? Was looking at the GUI and it does not look all that bad. Kind of looks like Gnome a long time ago. Interested in installing XFCE but would prefer a couple of opinions.

I do not plan migrating from Gnome but it just looks like a cool new GUI to play around with.

I am using XFCE4 on Arch Linux--I like it, but I have not totally figured out all the nuances.

Installing it costs you nothing---try it and see what you think. I believe gdm will let you chose between Gnome and XFCE at login

Alternatively, you can edit ~/.xinitrc to take you straight to XFCE

I quite like XFCE and use it on a couple of old machines I have. To me its sort of what I would have liked GNOME to be (feature rich, but nice). You can use gtk2 themes designed for GNOME and they will work fine. XFCE is also light, so will run very well on old hardware.

I'm using xfce, because it's not bloated(Gnome, K) yet not primitive( blackbox, fvwm2, twm etc...) It provides useful features like alt-TAB switching, taskbar and toolbar. It's light and reasonably good looking, functional and nice.

However the xffm filemanager is no good, and is a serious shortcoming of xfce.

Try the new file manager called Thunar (XFCE 4.4 test versions).

I liked xfce but rather stick with gnome for now. XFCE was different but neat. Guess I'll try it out more in depth on another older machine later. Nice light weight GUI.

xfce is kinda nice...a quick. not fluxbox, but a nice change. thunar seems nice too...definately worth playing with for a bit...
