xf86config help

Ok well i have a laptop that im trying to use linux on and the problem is that the mandrake or redhat installer cant configure the Xconfigfile and i dont know the specs of the hardware to do it and the company who made it does not either.

Ok so i stumbled upon a distro called Knoppix. It kicks a** it configures X for me and everything but the one problem is its a cd bootable os so everytime i reboot everything is lost.
Well anyway.

I was wondering if i can copy the configurations on the knoppix to my redhat install?

i was thinking of just copying the Xf86config files (there are 2 on the system) and would that do it?

Another thing is i found a Xconfiration program i think but i have a quesion about it: how do i use it?
just run the ./*.sh?

PLEASE DOnt tell me to look at the linux laptop sites ive done all that.

ok well any way...KNOPPIX configures everything and it works. In readhat i tried xconfigurator and it does not work.

did you check that link?

that program will replace the Xconfigfiles?

If you mean that you typed "xconfigurator" and nothing happened that's because it's "Xconfigurator", located in /usr/X11R6/bin on my RH 7.2 install.

Probably it will edit your /etc/XF86Config-4 file, assuming you're using XFree86 4.0 or higher.

Greets,

Who makes the laptop man, I can tell you putting linux on a laptop can be pure hell, my compaq was a Royal Pain in the Arse man... if you look at the bottome of the laptop who made it and the model number... I bet we can at least find out some basics to get you started.. if you can also get the FCC number I can trace some part numbers that way too if need be... lemme know.
