Xephyr nested login on Debian

I've got a machine running Debian 5 and I'm trying to get a nested X login to work. I've installed Xephyr and I can get to a GDM login screen and I can attempt to login, but no matter what username I use it won't actually log me in on any of the sessions. I've never used a nested X before and I'm very interested in experimenting with it. I have no idea where to go from here since it's not letting me login.
