well, if you've used linux before, then it is an extremely good idea to get linux on your xbox; (it is also funny to note the irony)
if you don't have any experience with linux, you may be frustrated, especially since it can be a hassle to get linux onto the xbox if you don't have the right version, or mod-chip i assume you know about www.xbox-linux.org ; it has very good links and resources the wiki has some solid hints: wiki.xbox-linux.org from what i've been following, the most advanced (and certainly most updated) xbox distro is gentoox: http://gentoox.shallax.com/ to begin, you want to make sure your xbox is old enough (the newer they are, the harder to put linux on them without disabling the ability to play games); of course, if the sole purpose of the xbox is to use linux, then by all means get a mod-chip and put in Cromwell open the drive, and if you have four "extra" holes, then you have a samsung dvd drive, which are the only ones that will easily read cd-r(w)'s; this link has pictures: http://unmodded.mine.nu/docs/IdentificationOfDrive then, you will need access to the MechAssault game (a rent is good enough) you will also need to be lucky enough to have a usb storage device that the xbox can understand; because the xbox is a small pc-computer (no matter what anyone says), it can read many normal usb sticks check out this page for the rest of the information, with step-by-step instructions: http://www.xbox-linux.org/docs/gettingstarted.html personally, i am waiting on the gamecube linux project ;) www.gc-linux.org ; and it is being developed by the same guys! |
I am in the process of doing this to my XBOX, but I am doing the software version so I can still play games. I have everything I need except for the xbox to usb adapter. Once I get that (hopefully this comming week) I am going to follor the instructions on www.xbox-linux.org to get it working. I will reply back here once I get it working and tell you if I had to change or add any steps.

that would be great. I really want to do this, but I don't know enough about it to convince myself to do it.

do you not know enough about linux or the process of getting it onto the xbox?
the best way to learn about it is to go through the step-by-step guide, answering as if you were unsure... it is really well-made another good source is the gentoox forums; just ask them about their experiences the whole process at the top-level is fairly simple; to do the software install, you want to get a temporary kernel in place; this is done using the mech-install trick (plugin a usb device that seems to have an xbox dashboard update and use that to get linux installed into the system) after you have a basic kernel, you boot it from the dashboard, and run a very simple distro installer (and they are very fast, since all they really do is dump a large root partition onto the harddrive) select linux from the dashboard, and your distro should start one thing you should check on now is the dvd drive; if you have one of the original xboxes (about 6 months from the release or older), then you should have no problem with the install; if you have a newer one, then you may have some trouble; if it is very new, don't expect the mech-install trick to work if you have a samsung drive, then your xbox should be the right age *edit: and there is really nothing to be convinced about; if you have the tools, a software install will not hurt your xbox |
do any of you guy's know about this dreamx machine. I really can't tell much from there website. Does it have the cromwell chip in it. I don't know, there are many of these damn xbox mods now, I don't knwo which one to get.

You can get Linux on a Xbox without using a mod-chip. Here is the Sourceforge project : http://sourceforge.net/projects/xbox-linux/
