X11 video mode configuration under Fedora
 

Not sure if this is the right section to ask this question, but here goes...

I want my desktop in a resolution of 1280x960@75Hz. At that resolution, I'm only given the option of a 60Hz refresh rate. However, apparently I'm allowed to use 75Hz at the higher resolution of 1280x1024, which doesn't seem to make sense to me.

I'm using a GeForce3 with the linux nvidia drivers installed under Fedora Core 2. I know my monitor is capable of the resolution I want under Windows XP.

Can I specify manually which mode I want xwindows to use? If not, can I at least force xwindows to recognize it?

Any help would be appreciated...!

Yes, you should be able to get 75Hz using a ModeLine entry in your X configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf of /etc/X11/XF86Config-4). You can generate a proper ModeLine using the ModeLine generator. Pop it in your monitor section and restart X.

Thanks for your help. This certainly seems to give me what it SAYS is 1280x960@75Hz. However... the mode doesn't behave properly; even at a full horizontal size setting on my monitor it doesn't take up the whole screen.

The modeline calculator that you linked lists a calculated pixel clock at about 140MHz (from memory). However, under the "same" video mode in windows the NVidia control panel lists a pixel clock of only 129.89MHz, and in this mode everything behaves normally.

At the same time, I suppose what I'm really wondering is why X didn't show an option for 1280x960@75Hz in the first place. What's going on here?
